Hi all, i just thought i would share some pictures with you of this acer, which was bound for the tip.

There has been a reasonable amount of new growth since i acquired it & its rather attractive now (in my eyes) but I'm led to believe that you dont create jins & shars on deciduous trees, if so what would you do with the dead stump. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

If the stump is removed to this angle Roy, it will give a strong taper to the main trunk.  Judicious use of a tinted sealant will camouflage the wound until the bark rolls back to cover it. This will take a year or two but the tree will look okay while you wait.

Many thanks Don, the stump goes then. I will keep updating the progress of this tree.

Looking right Roy.  Let it grow now with a fortnightly feed. Final styling can come later.

Not that it matters much now and I don't believe that it would have worked on this tree but the more I look around the more I have come to believe that deadwood is perfectly fine on non-coniferous trees. Fruit trees, oak, maple, and many others look perfectly normal with jins and sharis.

A huge improvement in the flow of the trunk here. It's gonna be a real looker.

Interesting point here as my wife & I were at the John Hanby Bonsai center a couple of weeks ago & I put the question to one of the guys working on the trees about jins etc on deciduous trees.

I referred to some deciduous trees at the John Hanby center  that had jins etc, he said rules are there to be broken. However i have since removed some jins from my Japanese Grey Bark Helm & an Oak tree & to me, they look better without them.
