I saw some little seedling fuschias in the garden centre today, in individual plugs and bought one - It's labelled "Happy Wedding Day". Is "Southern Belle" the name of the variety? It says it's a very showy giant flowered variety with double flowers. I've put it in a pot in the little greenhouse for now.

This is the only mention I can find of it:

they (wrongly) classify "southern belle" as the species and "happy wedding day" as a variety within that "species". Clearly this is nonsense, as true species and variety names must be latin.
Probably the "southern belle" bit is used to identify a group of fuchsia hybrids with certain characterisitics, whilst the "happy wedding day" is a cultivar or clone name for one particular plant within that group.

| Yes indeed Jim, these descriptions are very confusing for the public. They group a whole lot of fuchsias together with similar charteristics and call them something else. Another example of this is 'Californian Dreamers'. Happy Wedding Day is a cultivar and has been around in the UK since 1986, bred in Australia in 1985, parentage Pio Pico x White King. It is classed as a lax-upright or stiff trailer. If you want to keep the blooms white Penny grow it in semi shade, no direct hot sun on it otherwise it will be inclined to get a pink hue in the blooms .

OK, Kath. Thanks for the information about "Happy Wedding Day". I hope it's not too much of a trailer as I wanted an upright. It was labelled as that but labelling seems to be haphazard at the best!

'Stiff-trailer' should suit you fine then Penny, all my info comes from the, quote, 'The Fuchsia Bible' - ie 'The Checklist of Species, Hybrids and Cultivars of the Genus Fuchsia' by Leo B. Boullemier, has never let me down yet
