"The President".

Details:-
Type large-flowered hybrid
How Hardy Fully hardy in the UK
Height after two years 3 metres (10 ft)
Flowers RHS Award of Garden Merit. Bred by Charles Noble in 1876, it is a hybrid between C. x jackmanii and C. patens. The deep purple flowers (do not easily fade in the sun) are 15cm (6in) with silver on the reverse and reddish-purple stamens. Attractive wispy seed heads after the flowers fade.
Leaves Mid-green
Ideal Position Full sun or semi-shade - will tolerate a Northerly wall
Pruning Type Type 2

I don't always have good luck with clematis but this one will grow in most types of soil. I dug a hole down to the heavy clay, put in grit and then bedded in the clematis in a mixture of compost, grit, grit-sand and manure.

Do you grow this clematis?

Penny :)

Gladioli

I got my first ever gladioli bulbs this morning

large flowering and border varieties. Should I wait until the end of March to plant them? The label states "plant from March", with no more detail.

:)

For a shady spot in the garden.

..............Hostas are ideal.

Yes, I know some of you will say "Mine get destroyed by slugs and snails". When I first had them in the garden I had the same problem, and tried all the known recommendations for a solution to this problem.

A tried and tested solution :).
In the Spring when you see the first sign of growth coming up through the soil, put at least a 2inch/5cm layer of sharp grit, definitely not smooth grit, all around your plant and 3inches/7cms beyond your plant's outer edge. You must top up the grit after it has rained heavily or you have hosed frequently.

Since doing this I have had no stripped or holes in leaves. I don't think the slugs and snails like the feeling of sharp grit against their soft under bodies when travelling through the garden.

Hosta 'Sieboldiana Variant Elegans'

Hosta 'Shade Fanfare'

Hardy Geraniums

One can always rely on these to come back every year and give a wonderful display, love the deeper blue flecks on this one :)
