well our old fence was starting to drop to bits so we had to put a new one in place. its 6' high & i just hope it stands up to the high winds we sometimes get. this is the old fence

came home yesterday & the boy next door had managed to kick his football over the 6' high fence & broke a major branch off the acer in the red training pot in the foreground. another branch was suitably wired into place.

Hope you are all coping with the weather and not suffering too badly.

well thought id stick these two pics of my garden up. not really anything exiting. were in the middle of planning a japanese style garden with koi pond and such to the right of the trelis archway. and theres a huge greenhouse and veg plot at the very bottom of the garden. with a patio just out of shot at the top left :) poor garden gets a bit disowned over winter to be honest.

I have a piece of dry ground in the back garden which was once partly covered in gravel, which has worked its way into the soil, so I thought I'd try growing sedum and semprevium on it. I added sand and grit and here they are:

Tomatoes, apples and Kangaroo Paw plant

First time I've grown tomates in a hanging pot, quite pleased with these :)

'Scrumptious' apple. Purchased this patio apple tree last Autumn from Ken Muir's nursery. 23 apples on it at the moment, can't wait for them to ripen so that I can try one.

Red & Green Kangaroo Paw plant. Bought the seed back with me from Australia April 2008. Sowed same and kept small plants in greenhouse this past winter. In May planted into this large pot and stood on patio. Just beginning to flower. Think I shall overwinter them in the cool greenhouse, would hate to loose them.

I went to a Dorothy House Hospice Fete today, lots of plants - got a scented leaf geranium and a little fern. Must look out for hardy fuschias tomorrow, as I'm going to Bowood House for their Country Fair and Dog Show.

My roses are all rioting. :) I broke this one's stem by mistake this morning, so took the opportunity to photograph it. It's the most beautiful velvety, red rose with yellow stamens (I've forgotten its name and hope it will come back to me later), and has a fantastic scent. It's a climber.

Still a long way from "finished" (whatever that means, but here's some shots i took this morning, plus a "before photo and the plan I drew up before starting work...

Previously, the garden had been a rectangular patio running the full width of the house, and then very rough grass covering the rest.

The outline plan - transparent overlays then give details such as planting and building specifics:

At the begining of work (last winter) - basic areas lined out with sand, and before you ask, nobody was killed - the person outline is to scale, and was just to check that the lawn was spacious enough to lie down on:

Vegetable Garden

I've just made a net-cage out of bamboo canes and pond netting. Got caught in a hail-storm on the way to buy the canes! I've got the wigwam up for runner beans but they've not germinated yet.

I've put a chair nearly the wigwam and can sit and watch the vegetables grow.

My little weeping Kilmarnock willow is ready to burst forth in response to what it thinks is Spring. :) Spring is certainly in the air today and making me want to get out and garden. I saw an offer for 36 Gladiolus for £5. I don't really need that many but could always given some away.

A cold but sunny day. This is my garden as seen from the kitchen window, and beyond the trellis on the bottom right of the garden is the new patch for the "Pentland Crown". The winter flowering clematis is outside the front door.

Brightlingsea Open Gardens 28th/29th June 2008

Hi All,

Sorry I haven't been around lately, but during the past month I was busy getting ready for our village Open Gardens. This is the 16th year. I believe we started off with approximately 12 gardens open and this year it was 33, so you can see how we have grown :).

I usually open for the whole weekend, but this year only on the Sunday from 10.00 - 17.00 as I myself, this year, wanted to visit a few of the other Open Gardens on the Saturday. After midday Sunday we had had approx. 150 people through the garden, at that point I stopped counting :).

Amongst the visitors to my garden was a Japanese lady with her English husband, she was in awe of the flowering Fuchsia Bonsai. Later she showed me photos of herself in her beautiful kimono, and where were the photos taken with other ladies in national dress!!!!!!!, in the Japanese Garden at Cheslsea Flower Show, maybe you saw this on the tv in May. I felt honoured to have such a celebrity visit my garden :-)

The final total that we raised for our local Hospice was £9,570, that is our best ever :w00t:.

After all the recent rain and mild temperatures, everything is growing away, weeds included of course.

It's as if the Hosta clumps increase in size every day :)

well the grass has turned a little brown but all of the moss is keeping it mainly green:blush:
there is another greenhouse behind the one that can be seen then there is a gap of about twenty feet and then there is a garden shed.
there are trees all over the place that are out of sight (the missus is always complaining that i have too many:crying:

and I've been cleaning the gravel in places where the blackbirds persist in 'scrapping' soil everywhere :)
