Sad news

It is with infinite sadness that I have to tell you that Kath Van Hanegem, the proprietor of the 'Bonsai Garden' forum died at around 10.00 p.m. on the 16th of January. Commiserations to her husband Henk and son Jan. She wished that I will continue to administer the site, which I respectfully promise to do while I am able.

Grand daughters' visit

Mummy and Daddy were both workiing in the office yesterday, so Asha and Emmy came to visit. First crafting together, then to the local promenade playing on swings etc and of course a big ice-cream whilst sitting on the sea wall. Later pasta with spicy chicken and assorted veggies followed by trifle, how lovely to be able to sit outside again. A good day was had by all :):):)

Ladybirds

looks like we are in for a lot of ladybirds this summer, its the most ive seen for some time. These were gathered on the twigs of a yew tree, note some black & red ones.

Snow Drops @ Burton Agness Hall

We went to Burton Agness Hall last Saturday to get a look at this years snowdrops & what a wonderful display there was.

Hi Folks,

What a long drawn out winter this is, so much dull and dreary weather, plus all the cold and snow.

Today the sun is shining with a little breeze and +10c, so have opened all the greenhouse doors and vents to let the air 'blow-through' and get rid of the 'musty' smell and dry the concrete tiles of the floor. Plants really appreciate this extra light, all looking much more 'perky', have even taken some cuttings of fuchsia today from the old stock plants that have some cutting material on, and placed them on the 'hot-bed'/propagator.

Hope you are all keeping well, and like me looking forward to March/April when we can really get going. Bye for now and keep warm and healthy :)

Is it me or are there less dandelions this year? normally the lawns in the gardens where i live are covered in them, but this year there are few??

Autumn tidy-up

Yes it's that's time of year, everything is beginning to look 'tatty', especially the perennial border.

Saturday:

Started by cutting the privet hedge at the back of the border, reached halfway and smoke started coming out of the electric hedge cutter, switched it off, took it to the dump and straight on to B&Q for a new one :), not a very good start to the day, came home and completed hedge cutting and of course clearing up the mess.

Sunday:

Cutting back perennials, dividing and replanting same, digging in manure as I go. Have left things like penstemons and flox as they are still in full flower, also planting violas as I proceed. Only half way finished, nevermind it's a start:)

So that was my weekend, how was yours?

Derbyshire Bonsai

I see they won a gold award at Chelsea flower show for their wonderful display of Bonsai. Has anyone been to Derbyshire Bonsai & if so is it worth going (i know they won a gold) but you never know till youve been.

This is the verbascum that's seeded itself on the edge of the front garden. Hope that it survives passers by and that they don't damage its flower spike when it appears.

Pseudo workshop

It is with considerable reluctance that I announce the end of an era. I have disposed of my last goats after keeping them for almost 62 years. Its a big wrench for me and I shed a private tear when the final decision had been made.:crying:
The work load of mucking out barrowing etc had got a bit OTT. I have already started on clearing the goat-house which will be converted into a bonsai workshop with concrete floor, strip lighting, tables, chairs and bins for potting components. This is to demonstrate that I am not entirely devoid of ambition in my dotage. The building was constructed from random stone with similar stone divisions inside which have to be removed piece by piece. I probably built it quicker than I am demolishing these interior walls. Lots of wooden spars and planks will be available for reclamation. There'll be a bit of floor levelling, wall cladding and other delightful pastimes to keep me interested so I won't be vegetating out completely. The growing area of fodder for the animals in the strip will eventually revert to supplying the kitchen when the trees and brush are cleared. There may be the odd urban yamadori in there.;) Wish me luck!

Hi everyone!

I’m new on this forum, but I’m so excited I wanted to tell you about a wonderful new bonsai I just got.

I really, really wanted a Japanese Apricot, but had bad luck with orders that arrived in bad shape. Then my cousin told me to try Happy Bonsai at 877.859.0951. They have such beautiful specimens! I fell in love with their Japanese Apricot the minute I saw it.

It just came today in *perfect* condition. Not a leaf lost! It is sooo beautiful! You should see the blossoms. I’m so excited!

Marooned

We've been stuck on our hill for a while now. No vehicles have managed to get up for around three weeks. Today, the Sheffield buses have all stopped running and a great percentage of schools are closed. I'm unable to walk far and we're considering raiding the goat's feed bin for sustenance. Water, gas and electricity are all still coming in thank goodness but I can't bring any fuel in for the lounge fire. We've been warming pans of water and leaving them strewn around to lift the temperature a bit. We're wearing dressing gowns on top of our day clothes. The bins haven't been emptied again but at this rate we shall not have any more refuse to add to the overflowing mess. My thoughts are with Apisto in Motherwell, who reports that his water pipes are frozen. Someone was saying that we're experiencing global warming! :hehe:

Hello.

This is "Sweetie", my new little dog. She's three years old and is a cross between a Chinese Crested (Powder-Puff variety, not the hairless ones) and a poodle. She has a lovely temperament and has fitted right in with the other dogs. She and Cecil said "aaaagh" when they first came nose to nose but are fine now. She has yet to meet the three whippets, who come to stay at the end of the month. I think it will be more of a surprise for them than her.

She was taken from the local RSPCA home, along with a related Chinese Crested, by a dog groomer who wanted to take them both out in the big van each day, but she was very sick and didn't enjoy being in the vehicle. I happened to go to a friend's house for coffee on New Year's Day, heard about her sickness and was asked for advice. She was brought round to the house and I ended up taking her home with me. :) I didn't know about her before going for coffee, so went with one dog and came home with two.

Apisto and I launched a new site in the last few days of 2009. Its catering for newbies as well as bonsaiholics, has the usual services plus a live chat room and should be popular with emoticon addicts.:P

We had a speaker from Inverness ,could have listened to him all night long.

He showed us how to do a pleated stemed standard or twist stemed standard.

Also how to keep your stem of standards straight by wrapping wet cotton strips aroun stem then aroun stick time about till you get to top,then tie with string.

Bonsias we were shown too.

I did not get home untill 10.30pm
