This was the only way with this individual tree. What about that taper - isn't it great?

RE: rescued acer

I'm really pleased with how the new growth is developing on this tree, perhaps a new pot for next season & some root pruning in March 09.

RE: rescued acer

That's the most important Roy. how they look to you. We may spend alot of time discussing our trees on line and such but bonsai is still a very private journey.

RE: rescued acer

Interesting point here as my wife & I were at the John Hanby Bonsai center a couple of weeks ago & I put the question to one of the guys working on the trees about jins etc on deciduous trees.

I referred to some deciduous trees at the John Hanby center that had jins etc, he said rules are there to be broken. However i have since removed some jins from my Japanese Grey Bark Helm & an Oak tree & to me, they look better without them.

RE: rescued acer

Not that it matters much now and I don't believe that it would have worked on this tree but the more I look around the more I have come to believe that deadwood is perfectly fine on non-coniferous trees. Fruit trees, oak, maple, and many others look perfectly normal with jins and sharis.

A huge improvement in the flow of the trunk here. It's gonna be a real looker.

RE: rescued acer

Heh heh, what a difference a bit of advice from an expert makes :)

Well done Roy and thank you Don, we can ALL learn from these tips :)

RE: rescued acer

Looking right Roy. Judicious use of a tinted sealant will camouflage the wound until the bark rolls back to cover it. This will take a year or two but the tree will look okay while you wait.

rescued acer

Hi all, i just thought i would share some pictures with you of this acer, which was bound for the tip.

There has been a reasonable amount of new growth since i acquired it & its rather attractive now (in my eyes) but I'm led to believe that you dont create jins & shars on deciduous trees, if so what would you do with the dead stump. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
