Indeed you can buddy. Its decorative, weed restricting and insulating. Some of us use aquarium grit too.

My elms dont seem to like it much lol.But might be cuz i repotted them a month back.

for most of my bonsai i use the kaizen bonsai premium mix , i find it a good mix of akadama , kiryu and sterilised bark . me trees seem to love it :)

:)[/quote]Yeah instead of doing a good bonsai mix,They put normal potting compost in a bag then name it bonsai compost.

and sell it for 10x the cost of normal potting mix.just cuz it has bonsai writen on it.

Levington used to do a good bonsai mix.found an old bag hidden away at a garden centre.

It was like 90% calcined hard clay/like your cat litter.and 5% pine bark.and 5% peat etc.or something like that.

not 100% great but alot better then what you buy now.

Akadama is ok.But if i planted and dressed everything in it,id have to buy like 3 14Ltr bags.and at around £18 a bag.

The trees look much fresher. I'm using a bagged mixture for bonsai from the garden centre. :)

I used to use lots of moss,Not so much anymore.Gets out of control and takes ages to clean up.

started to use akadama for dressing,but found it turns to mud/mush after about 4 months.

Hello.

I've just "spring cleaned" my bonsai. I removed the moss that had grown since last year and trimmed roots and replaced soil. Hope I've not done it at the wrong time! Looking forward to the new season.
