Only the sliding window to be fitted, the remaining nuts and bolts in the frame, the doors to be made and fitted and the whole thing bolted to the paving stones. Hopefully the coming weekend will see the end of the job.

I have a sempervivum, the pumpkin, courgette and tomato plants in it, along with one or two others things that don't like getting wet.

http://good-times.webshots.com/slideshow/563936080xWdBGA

:)

RE: Greenhouse construction

Thank you very much, Kath. Yes, most inconvenient to be off my feet at this time. Such a lot to do in the garden. My sister is being a star and coming over from Devizes, 10 miles away, as often as she can, and friends are helping a lot.

Today was the first day that I could put my feet to the ground without feeling the bruising as painfully as before, the problem is now more in my ankles. My sister took me to get ankle supports and they're helping a lot, keeping down the swelling.

Ian worked on the greenhouse again this morning and has the side and back panels in. He intends to bolt it to the paving stones before putting in the roof panels as the wind would take it away otherwise. :) If it's not raining (which it is now) tomorrow morning, he and my sister are coming again to continue working on the greenhouse. I'm really looking forward to having one - should have got one years ago. The owner of the whippets who come to stay regularly has ordered me three clematis plugs through her newspaper, they'll come in September and can go in the g/h, and I want to put in a little pumpkin seedling I was given the other day. Can't wait!

Hope you were able to get into the garden today.

:)

RE: Greenhouse construction

Sorry to hear you had a nasty fall Penny, I do hope the soreness hurries up and goes away, why do these things always happen at such inconvenient times!!!!, just when you wanted to help BIL with the greenhouse. I know you just can't wait to get in there and start doing things :)

I can see you in there, and in no time at all it will be crammed full of plants :D, you'll get a lot of pleasure from it I'm, sure.

Take care and get better soon, Best Wishes, Kath

RE: Greenhouse construction

Thanks for your good wishes, Stymie. :)

I must get more Arnica. I've used a tube. I managed to cycle up the road to the local Co-op this morning. Cycling is easier on my feet than walking.

Yes, the door is in two parts, so each must slide outwards. I was given a little pumpkin seedling the other day and I plan will grow it in the greenhouse. I also want a collection of sedum as I like those.

Sunny this morning. Will have to get the hose out.

:)

RE: Greenhouse construction

It looks as though you have a nice wide doorway Penny. Something that you will appreciate when carrying stuff in or out. Mine is a bit resrictive in that department. I also had to dig a trench in mine so that I could stand upright.:D Keep up with the Arnica. You'll soon be fit again. I hope that the dogs are getting enough exercise meanwhile.

RE: Greenhouse construction

By clicking the thumbnail, you can see the latest photo of the greenhouse. My brother-in-law intends to work on it over the weekend, weather permitting. Some of the rigid PVC panels are fitted.
I've had a fall and am on crutches, hobbling around on very bruised feet and ankles and working in the garden is painful, so it's nice to think that the greenhouse is on it's way to completion.

:)

RE: Greenhouse construction

Thanks, Jinny. I've always wanted
one. I've come to a halt, with one side and the doors still
to complete. I'm waiting for warmer weather so I can
drape the pieces over an open door, to make it easier to
assemble by myself. I'm hoping a neighbour will help
with the cladding and fitting of the semi-rigid panels
(instead of glass), when he is well enough. He damaged
his leg in a fall and I'm walking his little dog daily for
another month. Then I have to get railway sleepers,
to which I'll bolt the frame, so it will be a while yet. :)

RE: Greenhouse construction

Hello penny

How are you doing on the green house...Just wondering how you was getting on with this weather...we are thinking of getting a green house when we do the garden.

RE: Greenhouse construction

Thanks very much for the link, Keith. :) Very useful. Thanks. I did, in fact, see a sign for tool hire on a DIY store I passed this morning, and there's another hire firm nearby. If I did drill holes, would I line them with "Rawlplugs" or sealant of any kind to fix in the bolts? I think it will probably be easier, in the long run, to get railway sleepers. But I'll think on't. :)

RE: Greenhouse construction

As you will not be making regular use of one, it would be more economical to find a tool hire company and rent one by the day.

RE: Greenhouse construction

Ah! I've decided to bolt it to railway
sleepers, as they suggest in the literature.
They only show two sleepers, for the sides - what
about the front and back ends? If they're not on
sleepers it's going to leave a space. I've been
looking around at sleepers and must remember
the dimensions of the greenhouse so I get a
suitable length sleeper.

How easy is it to drill paving stones? That's another
way of bolting down the greenhouse. I don't own a
drill but it would probably be cheaper to get one that
to buy four sleepers. :)

RE: Greenhouse construction

I hope that the wind didn't move your new greenhouse Penny. Today has been quite settled here with some sun in the middle of the day. I managed to sow five lots of veg and some flowers. I also replaced the mineral felt on the chicken house roof where I now store goat food. The wind had removed half of it and one area was soaked and I couldn't fasten it down securely. The solution entailed weighting it down with a couple of car wheels complete with tyres. Very decorative.

RE: Greenhouse construction

Took another look at the diagram and
think I've "sussed" it.
The open side of the strut has to
face the side of the greenhouse
(i.e. the left strut opening faces to the left),
otherwise I can't fit the little cross struts!
Just hope it's correct.

:)

RE: Greenhouse construction

I'm having problems reading the
angles needed for certain of the
struts of the front framework.
I need to know which way the
open plane faces on left-hand strut
made from bolting XL55S and XL56
together. A three-sided strut is formed..
The same with the right-hand strut formed in the same way.

The seem to want to fit snuggly with the
open plane facing to the left (on the left one)
and to the right (on the right one).
Pouring over the diagram, though, the
left strut seems to having the opening
facing forward, and the right-hand one
seems to have the open plane facing
to the right. I'm baffled. I've been
"fighting" with it since 9 a.m. this
morning - just stopped at 2.15 p.m.

Any advice would be gratefully received.
I attached a photo of the diagram.

Penny :)

RE: Greenhouse construction

:D Thanks for the encouragement, Stymie. Hope your female relatives don't read your post! You might end up with a thick head!

It's quite a challenge. Diagrams are all well and good but I can't picture what a lot of it is going to look like. I'll get the frame bolted together (I see I ought to have all nuts on the inside, some aren't, so I'll re-fix those), and then ask a neighbour what he thinks the diagram means regarding the fixing of the semi-rigid panels and cladding. It's the cladding that looks tricky. Though, by the time I get to that stage, it might be more clear.

I've taken a photo of the first section I fixed. An on-line friend in Canada sent me a report that we could be in for gales after the weekend, so I'll make sure the frame isn't outside to blow away! I think the easiest way for me to anchor it to the ground will be to bolt it to railway sleepers - one of the suggestions in the instructions. I don't want to drill into paving stones - for one thing, I don't own a drill. :)

RE: Greenhouse construction

Go for it Penny. Read the instructions carefully. Sorted the nuts, bolts, screws, brackets, etc. and have put together the back part of the frame. Will do the front next. It's not warm out, though, and the breeze is cold so I've come indoors to warm up. Will take a few days, a few hours at a time, to get it together. Just hope I fix the correct parts together and don't have to undo any of it!
:)

RE: Greenhouse construction

OK.
