Very nice! I planted one in the garden a year or so back. Must take a cutting and see if I can grow one like yours.

Is it bonsai? Some people tell me that it is pure topiary.

Hope this isn't aimed at me (I do believe I've likened this look to topiary before, though I wouldn't argue in this particular case that it means it's not a bonsai).

I just personally would like the foliage pads to look a bit less "groomed" with individual shoots either extending beyond the basic outline or being slightly recessed, rather than them all ending in the same plane, which, I think gives it a "just clipped hedge" kind of look.

I'd also like to see an overall thinning of the foliage, with more neutral spaces. I want to think a pidgeon (to scale, obviously) could fly through the branches, rather than crashing into a solid wall of foliage.

Jim.  As you know it was one of mine but it died last year in mysterious fashion.  I never found out the cause, nothing obnoxious in the roots or elsewhere.  I have now finished sobbing gently.

That was a good object lesson however and I have taken steps along your suggested path with my remaining Lonicera nitida trees.

My name is Don and I'm a bonsaiholic.
My imaginary friend Givitago takes over when I'm not sure of myself in print. He's not a complete fool - several bits are missing.

Oh what a terrible shame Don, so sorry to hear that you lost it, especially as you don't know the cause.

By the way the two that you sent me are growing in open ground in the back garden, not going to disturb them for a year or two yet

hi kath

here's one of dons ex lonicera, it looks much nicer in real life, my photography skills are somewhat lacking i'm afraid, the pic seems very grainy for some reason, i probably had the camera on low quality setting....
whilst pinching to keep the growth in check, i left the bottom right branch to extend further outwards so that it is slightly longer than the one above it, maintaining the triangular shape....

rgds, john

i used to be indescisive- but now i'm not so sure

Wow, thanks for posting the piccy John, it really looks healthy and I can understand your thinking in respect of the lower right hand branch. Nice movement in the trunk too.
