Hello.

I dug up one of the hawthorns from the bottom of the garden today. Its tap root was substantial and very secure in the ground so I had to hack out the hawthorn, leaving a piece with some roots. Do you think there's a chance of it growing?

I've potted it in bonsai soil and will water it and take my chances.

Of course it will grow Penny, it already has a good start over a straight cutting which would be traditionally planted around this time.

Make sure that it doesn't wobble in the pot.

My name is Don and I'm a bonsaiholic.
My imaginary friend Givitago takes over when I'm not sure of myself in print. He's not a complete fool - several bits are missing.

Thanks, Stymie. That's good to know. I wondered how to shape the bottom. I'll put a stone between it and the edge of the pot to stop it moving.

(Snowed a little this morning.)
