Very intriguing photo! What was the soil type around the area? I wonder if there might be some link to the growth type.

Welcome Karen.
The soil type is fairly heavy clay in the area and slightly acidic but that particular location is not over moist being exposed thus.
Whereabouts in the world are you? This will be important if and when you ask questions. =Don.
