Hello
i have a couple of worries with them both.
The Japanese maple is looking very bushy and not to sure about tidying it up and the roots are starting to come out of the drainage holes...but have read it is unsafe to root prune at this time of year...is this right.
The chinese elm has started to lose leaves they sort of go yellow with black spots on them and then drop off.
They live on the balconey and get morning and evening sun and get water every night.i've got to admit the soil on the elm is far from perfect...but water does drain through in about 20 seconds...the maple about 10 seconds

On the maple, some will let the shoots extend to about 5 sets of leaves then prune back to 2 set of leaves.

Dont worry about the roots coming out of the drainage holes. You can cut them off or leaves them. One thing you can do if your tree is young is to place the pot on the ground. The roots will then grow into the ground and significantly increase the size of your tree and the speed of its growth. You can leave it there for a year or so and when you are happy with the development you can just cut the roots off at the bottom of the pot and go from there. Almost like growing in the ground, but not quite.

For the elm you mention that the soil is far from perfect, perhaps you need to let it dry out a little bit more between waterings.

Hello Ed
Thanks for the reply....will do that with the pruning with the japanese maple....i don't know how old it is...but it's got a good trunk on it...so i'll just trim the roots off like suggested..the chinese elm is still doing the same so willl let it dry a little...i know they both need re-potting...but its going to have to wait now.
Thanks again
