My white pine has produced all this growth this year - I've not seen it before. Not sure what it is. Does this growth mean it's male or female?

They look like the male inflorescens Penny. They may be removed to preserve the vitality of the tree but one here and there may reward you with an odd cone later.  I like to see a cone but keep them to a minimum on my pines. Talking of cones, I have one on a Larch which has been in position for three seasons. It was initially a surprise because I usually pinch out all new growth on them, as I have been doing this week.

My name is Don and I'm a bonsaiholic.
My imaginary friend Givitago takes over when I'm not sure of myself in print. He's not a complete fool - several bits are missing.

Thanks very much. I'll take most of them off, I think, as suggested, or the poor tree is going to be weighed down with cones.

Don, do you recommend the removal of all cones from pines & larch then?

No, I like to see one or two. Too many would sap the trees energy though.
