Is this usuall?

My name is Don and I'm a bonsaiholic.
My imaginary friend Givitago takes over when I'm not sure of myself in print. He's not a complete fool - several bits are missing.

'Evening Don,

It seems to happen more often with 'oldies' that have for the first years of their life been planted in the garden, that's my experience.

This was first grown in the garden for approx. 10 years, chopped down and planted into a 5 litre pot for a couple of years

What you now see as a trunk, was under the soil level in the above photo, it was more of a thick root than a thick stem.

It has now been in a bonsai pot for 3 years. The only 'live' wood seems to be the rear half of that trunk, the front is definitely dead, I suppose one day it will fall to pieces

I'm going to do some more of these.  There are some ancient enkliandrias (spelling), on my patch with oceans of growth to cut back.

ENCLIANDRAS are ideal for this type of work as when 'chopped-back' will shoot again, a bit 'every-which-way'

Thanks for the correction Kath.  I was too lazy to look it up.
