Hello

Good to find this place, I'm a bit of a bonsai fuchsia addict myself!

I was just wondering if anyone knows the difference between fuchsias 'Hemsleyana' and 'Microphylla'.  Both great for bonsai as they have tiny leaves and flowers, but I can't for the life of me see any difference between either the leaves or flowers on my plants.

As we say in the antiques business... Hello.

Welcome to the site Babs.  You will find a group of friendly people here and if anyone can answer your question it will be Kath our host. She'll be along soon.  I have just replied to let you know that we are awake.  =Don.

Hi Babs and welcome,

Sorry for the delay in answering, but I have just returned to the U.K. from visiting the Netherlands.

Question: Difference between f. hemsleyana and f. microphylla.

As a general rule, hardly any difference at all, in fact in some books it is written  -  "f.hemsleyana is synonomus with f. microphylla subsp. hemsleyana"

f.microphylla has what is called perfect and pistillate flowers, the latter being slightly smaller. On the other hand f.hemsleyana is sometimes described - "as a group of the apetalous species = no petals only corollas"

Yes, the deeper you go into these questions the more complicated it gets , but as I said earlier most 'fuchsia folk' consider them to be the same.

I was wondering where you had got to Kath.  Perhaps visiting Henk's relatives.  I hope that you had a pleasant time.

Brilliant, thanks very much!!

That'll stop me having to stare at them intently trying to figure it out...

The're both looking quite good for the bonsais so far!
