Hi Kath,
I love this site, and hope more people will post lovely pictures of their fuchsia bonsai! I'm new to fuchsia growing, and have bought some unwanted, unsold "end of season" stumps from a local garden centre - Tom Thumb and Alice Hoffman. I live in a flat, so growing outdoors is not an option, but my plan is to just let them regrow with the warmth indoors, and take a few cuttings from them to start my bonsai projects. Seems to be going quite well - the Tom Thumb has sprouted plenty of new shoots, and I've taken a cutting from that already, and the Alice Hoffman has sprouted one new shoot.
I just have one general question for now Kath: since overwintered stumps/bushes tend to sprout from the base - after winter how do you ensure that your bonsai fuchsia sprout new growth from the branches up top rather than from the base of the trunk? For me this might not be an issue in future since my plants will not be outside and hence will not suffer from dieback during winter...

| Hi Hlam, Welcome to Bonsaigarden. As you say when left to overwinter in the ground, or kept in pots in just a frost free place most will always shoot from below the soil level because the previous years top growth has died-back. If you overwinter them in what we call 'in-the-green' that is, in a greenhouse or a cool, light place indoors, at approximately plus 5c/7c and prune the exisiting stems back to the required length in the Autumn, they will then sprout from those exisiting stems. Hope this is of help to you - Kath

Thanks Kath,
That's very helpful. If I ever get to a nice bonsai from my cuttings I'll post some pictures (probably in a year or two!)
