I got my first ever gladioli bulbs this morning

large flowering and border varieties. Should I wait until the end of March to plant them? The label states "plant from March", with no more detail.

| Hi Penny, As you know I'm in the South-east and have always waited until the end of April, when the soil is a bit warmer and risk of severe frost is less likely, maybe that is a bit over cautious

Around here we leave them in the ground year round (at least, I do, and I'm not aware of anyone who lifts them) with no ill effects, so I reckon you're safe to plant them now, as you can't be much colder there than here.
Just make sure the ground is fairly well drained where you plant them - they're much more likely to succumb to overly wet conditions than the cold...

Definitely agree with your 'free-draining' Jim, even though we have sandy soil, when planting bulbs/corms etc I always put a good handful of 4 mil grit in the bottom of the planting hole

Thanks, Jim and Kath. I was advised to put sand in the hole before planting, but it sounds as though grit will do the job, too. It's very cold today with frozen pond water, so I think I will wait a while before planting. Might put them in the same time I plant the potatoes on Good Friday. I'll be leaving them in the ground.
