for most of my bonsai i use the kaizen bonsai premium mix , i find it a good mix of akadama , kiryu and sterilised bark . me trees seem to love it

My elms dont seem to like it much lol.But might be cuz i repotted them a month back.

Indeed you can buddy. Its decorative, weed restricting and insulating. Some of us use aquarium grit too.
