Hello Folks.
An online friend's daughter gave him this bonsai the other day and he would like to know what it is. Are you able to identify it?

It looks like a privet.
Thanks.

Kath is probably correct. I can't see the bark very well so variety is hard to pinpoint. The first line of enquiry is always the source or vendor.

Looking at the leaves again I think it might be variety 'retusa' but still not 100% sure.

Thanks, Kath and Don. I'll pass on the information. Very good of you to take time to consider the little tree. It was bought from a door-to-door salesman hawing them round. Not really the way to buy a bonsai, I think, unless you know what you're doing.

Never heard of door-to-door bonsai salesmen before

No, I hadn't, either, Mr.M.
Here are two photos of the bark to aid further identification. If it's a ficus, is it classed as a tropical and kept indoors?
Thanks, folks.

| It isn't F. retusa [sorry Kath]. If it is a fig, yes its sub-tropical and will need protection when the weather turns cold. Mine are outside of course but they usually come in when the temperature drops to low single figures. I have had one out in slight frost without losing it but that is not recommended.
