I understand that unlike the Sequoea giganteum, these are quite thirsty trees. Have you found that is so?

yes they are , a good drink EVERY day in summer . iv got them planted in akadama and bark this year to see how they fair up

Mine don`t need watering that much,but then there still in normal pots.
The group planting looks good without leaves.But a mass of bush/leaves when in leaf.I take it there not staying like that anyway?
