Hi Kath,

Your bonsai fuchsia trees are very pretty! I notice that you tend to keep the basic branch structure each year when overwintering, presumably by removing virtually all of the new growth during the year at the end of the season. Are you ever tempted to leave some of it on in an attempt to get finer branch ramification for next year (i.e. just by defoliating only and keeping the new stems intact)?

Yes you're quite right Hlam,

They get cut 'hard-back' at the end of the growing season and left to sprout new growth again during the winter months in the greenhouses. This has already been cut back again during the winter.

Problem with fuchsias is, if you leave some of the finer growth on from the previous year,

(a) some of this will get die-back or

(b) what exists, 'grows out' much too much, and growth is weaker, ie thin and wispy or

(c)some varieties will be very reluctant to come back at all.

(d) the only ones that get a light trim at the end of the season are the 'Ecliandra' types ie the ones that have naturally very small leaves and flowers, they do not take kindly to hard pruning.

Thanks Kath,

This is good to know as I'm in the process of dealing with a second-year fuchsia bonsai, so I'll see what I decide when it comes to overwintering this year...

No krazykat, not real birds, these two are made of metal. They are what I call my 'Bonsai Guards' . A fellow bonsai friend gave them to me several years ago, they seem to deter the young blackbirds from digging in the pots with their beaks, I assume they are searching for young insects and used to make a terrible mess, but since placing these two metal birds on the tables it hardly happens anymore

There's a life sized Heron among my trees but it has no effect. The real birds plop on it.

My name is Don and I'm a bonsaiholic.
My imaginary friend Givitago takes over when I'm not sure of myself in print. He's not a complete fool - several bits are missing.
