Front garden (hardy fuchsias) is surrounded by a 30 year old Berberis Darwini hedge. During the past 5/6 years, the front half has been dying off due to a grey type lichens. A couple of years ago I replaced 4 pieces with Pyracantha Saphyr, grew very quickly and seems resistant to the lichens.

So made the decision to replace the damaged front half completely with Pyracantha Saphyr. Son, Jan, came down and dug out the old pieces for me (I don't have the stength in the ol' arms to do this anymore , whilst he was doing this I was using the loppers and bagging up the pieces. He dug the ground over for me and also planted the new plants, bless him

See here for the result, looks a bit strange atm, but it will soon grow

Good luck with it. Like us, you will be accruing some bonfire fodder.

On the question of invasive lichen. We scrub them off bonsai but a hedge would be a bit arm wrestling. I have discovered that spraying with vinegar disposes of them. I use the remnants from the pickled onions in a spray. I believe that the onion content keeps a lot of insects off too. Save one of the affected hedge plants in a pot and try it. =Don.

Thanks for all the tips Don, I remove the lichens from larches with an old 'half-worn-out' fine wire suede brush, works a treat, trouble is you can't buy them anymore around here, asked in numerous shoe shops, and got the same answer "We're not allowed to sell them anymore, health and safety ruling", now have you ever heard anything so ridiculous (dare say you have ).

In regards to the old bits of hedge, now removed, I had tried removing the lichens with a fine wire brush, worked OK for a couple of years, but then gave up on that idea as it was very time consuming, but the Berberis that we have left in the ground, only affected very slightly, I will definitely try your vinegar treatment on that thanks again

Hi Kath, i got this pack of 6 brushes, 4 of them are wire similar to suede brushes, as you can see they only cost me £1.60 from a stall on pocklington market.

Hope this may help you in your search as i,m sure they will be available on most market tool stalls.
