| Would you say this is Horse Chestnut Scale? it started in the summer on an Acer tree. I keep removing this white (presumably eggs) by hand, but it seems to keep coming back. Any treatment recommended please.

Ooh, that doesn't look very pleasant. Hope you clear it up, Kath. I've not heard of horse-chestnut scale, so I've learned something new today.

| I hadn't heard of it either Penny, but a couple of months ago I was watching one of the gardening programmes on the tele and it was Carol Klein who said that it was found to be on more small trees than normally, during last summer. I did look it up in Pippa Greenwood's 'Pests & Diseases' book and she has written it is more unsightly than harmful, but can be treated with Imidacloprid (insecticide). As I don't like using chemicals of any sort unless absolutely no other solution is to be found for a problem, I will give Keith's soapy water solution a try.

Hope you're successfull in eliminating it, Kath, without the use of chemicals. I'm looking for something to treat my roses while they're still dormant. There was so much blackspot last year and lots of diseased leaves remain on the plants. I've taken off as many as possible.

Kath I had that white scaly stuff on my h/chestnuts and sycamores last summer and I seem to remember it was very simple to remove it with a cotton wool bud soaked in surgical spirit. Didn't seem to harm the trees at all. SJ.

Thanks for the tip John. There are none on the Acer atm, but if it comes back, will try that too.
